Kenya’s power distribution utility company, Kenya Electricity Company, has added another substation to its growing network.
The power company Kenya Electricity Company launched a 33/11kV substation in Mtundia, Kilifi County, to improve the quality of power supply in the area and meet the growing customer base.
The new substation costs approximately US$2.3 million and includes 4 distribution lines (feeders), which will improve the stability of the electricity supply in Kilifi County.
In addition, it will increase the capacity of the existing Kilifi substation and provide alternative supplies to customers in the region to minimize power outages.
It is one of the four substations built by the power company under the Kenya Electric Power Modernization Project (KEMP), with a total cost of US$11.7 million. Other substations are Sabaki 33/11kV, Kaloleni 33/11kV and Kokotoni 33/11kV.
Bernard Ngugi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Electric Power Company, said: “Given the exponential growth of the past eight years, these new investments will improve the quality of electricity provided to residents of Kilifi County and its surrounding areas.”
He added: “From 2013 to the present, the number of customers in Kilifi County has increased by 260%, from 51,821 to the current 186,403. This has increased the visit rate from 21% to 71%.”
Ngugi explained that this growth was driven by the company’s last mile connection project in cooperation with the government.
