Oil-immersed power engineering transformers should use oil as an important cable sheathing method for transformers, and rely on oil as refrigeration chemicals (temperature protection, air cooling, and water cooling). The key reason for placing pebbles on the oil pit of oil-immersed power engineering transformers is convenience: fire safety and oil drainage.

This part of the oil-immersed power engineering transformer is generally called the oil unloading pool or the oil unloading, leading to the safety accident oil pit or the accident oil pool. When a safety accident occurs, such as a gasoline pump or an explosion accident, the oil of the transformer will be introduced into the oil discharge pit through the cobblestone, and then flow into the safety accident oil pool. In addition, high temperature transformer oil can reduce fire after being cooled by pebbles.

Some of the pools are made of grilles, and some are not made of grilles. For grids, pebbles are placed on top of the grid; for those without grids, pebbles are placed in the oil discharge pit. Placing cobblestones is one of the reasons that it is beneficial to unloading oil. In addition, the cable sheath is beneficial to maintenance, and it is also a reason for operating staff to check.

When the transformer catches fire, the oil still ignites when it leaks to the ground, and it is not easy to block the oil hole at the bottom of the oil drain pit. The oil flows into the space between the cobblestones of the transformer, avoiding oil stains on the surface, and it will also cool when the oil is drained. The effect of oil temperature to avoid oil ignition.
